What Is Tourmaline?

Pegmatites and metamorphose limestones that have been in contact with granite are rich sources for Tourmaline minerals. These valuable gems are created under high temperature and pressure conditions, when certain elements come together to form different species, these include but are not limited to Rubellite, Indicolite, Schorl, Dravite, Achroite Paraiba , Verdelite and Uvitie – all of them are distinguished by their unique coloring. The complexity of the crystal structure coupled with its chemistry also give rise to a fascinating play between polarity and coloration in these gemstones!

Tourmaline is a captivating boron silicate mineral with an intricate structure, scoring 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale of hardness and demonstrating brittle fractures when broken. Tourmaline also exhibits a remarkable "pyroelectricity" property which can draw tiny lightweight objects towards it when heated or rubbed! The name 'Tourmaline' derives from the ancient Sinhalese word “turmali”, used to refer to all hues of precious gems found in Sri Lanka.
