What is fluorite?
Fluorite is a naturally occurring mineral made of calcium fluoride. It forms cubes and octahedrons and has perfect cleavage, meaning it splits cleanly along flat planes when struck hard. At 4 on the Mohs scale, it's a soft stone, so it's better suited to display pieces, towers, and tumbled stones than to everyday rings.
Fluorite colors: purple, green, blue, and rainbow
Pure fluorite is colorless. The color comes from trace amounts of other elements and from natural radiation in the ground, which is why a single deposit can produce so many shades.
- Purple fluorite: the classic color, often linked with calm and the third eye chakra
- Green fluorite: fresh and soft, popular for desks and study spaces
- Blue and blue-green fluorite: rarer, with a cool, watery look
- Rainbow fluorite: bands of purple, green and clear in a single piece
Why fluorite glows under UV light
Shine an ultraviolet torch on many fluorite pieces, and they glow blue or violet. The effect is so typical of this mineral that scientists named it after fluorite: fluorescence. Not every specimen glows, and the strength varies by deposit, which is part of the fun of collecting it.
Why choose fluorite crystals
In crystal traditions, fluorite is known as a stone of clarity and focus. People often choose it for:
- Study and work: a point or tower on the desk
- Meditation: a tumbled stone held while you clear your mind
- Collecting: no two rainbow pieces look alike
- Gifts: its colors make it an easy first crystal to give
(These are traditional uses. We don't make medical claims about any crystal.)

How to use fluorite crystals
- On your desk: place a point near your laptop or notebook.
- In meditation: hold a tumbled stone in your left hand while you breathe slowly.
- In a crystal grid: small chunks of green or purple fluorite work well as accent stones.
How to care for fluorite
Fluorite scratches easily, so store it apart from harder crystals like quartz. Clean it with a dry or barely damp soft cloth rather than soaking it. Strong, direct sunlight can fade some purple and blue fluorite over time, so a shaded shelf is the best spot.
Fluorite FAQs
What is fluorite used for?
Fluorite is traditionally linked with focus, clarity, and calm. People keep it on desks, use it in meditation, and collect it for its colors.
Is rainbow fluorite natural?
Yes. The bands form naturally as the crystal grows. Polishing shapes the stone but doesn't add color.
Can fluorite go in water?
A quick wipe with a damp cloth is fine. Don't soak it: it's soft and can lose its polish.
Is fluorite safe to handle?
Yes, polished and raw fluorite are safe to hold and display. Just don't use it to make crystal water or elixirs.
